What SAGEM Taught a 16-Year-Old About Counter-Terrorism

Counter-terrorism technology training at sixteen with SAGEM France, and the one method that still runs through every sweep two decades later.

In 2003, at sixteen years old, I sat in a training program run by SAGEM France — the defense electronics firm now part of Safran Group — learning explosive device detection, RF spectrum analysis, and technical surveillance countermeasures. I was the youngest person in the room by a wide margin, there because my father's security company needed technical depth and because he believed, correctly, that you build that depth in people young.

Twenty years and hundreds of sweeps later, three lessons from that training still govern everything I do professionally.

Lesson one: the spectrum doesn't lie, but it doesn't volunteer either

TSCM work — sweeping a boardroom or an embassy office for listening devices — looks glamorous in films: a beeping wand, a triumphant discovery. The reality is a spectrum analyzer showing you thousands of legitimate signals, and your job is to explain every single one. The GSM tower. The WiFi access points. The wireless mouse. The building management system. The anomaly is not a red flag on a screen; it is the one emission you cannot account for after you have accounted for everything else.

SAGEM's instructors drilled a phrase into us: detection is elimination. You do not find the threat — you eliminate the innocent until only the threat remains. That method transferred to every discipline I later touched. Intelligence analysis is the same craft: not spotting the dramatic signal, but systematically explaining the mundane ones until the residue tells you something. Most analytical failures I see today, in security work and in open-source intelligence, are failures to do the boring elimination first.

Lesson two: the device is dumb; the emplacer is smart

Bomb detection training spends surprisingly little time on bombs. It spends enormous time on people — because an explosive device is the endpoint of a human process: reconnaissance, access, emplacement, and escape. Find any link of that chain and you defeat the device without ever seeing it.

This inverted how I think about protection. Amateur security guards a thing. Professional security understands the adversary's process and breaks it early. When I design counter-drone architecture for a facility today, the same logic applies: the drone is the dumb endpoint. The operator, the launch site, the reconnaissance flight two weeks earlier — that is where defense actually happens. Hardware vendors sell answers to the endpoint. Doctrine addresses the process.

Lesson three: the person you brief should be the person who delivers

The men teaching us were not salesmen or slide-writers. They were practitioners who had done the work in the field and could answer any question from muscle memory. The credibility gap between them and every conference presenter I have watched since taught me something about expertise: it is not transferable through an organization. It lives in individuals.

I built my career on that principle. When a client engages me for a TSCM sweep, a threat assessment, or counter-drone doctrine, the person they brief is the person who delivers. There is no junior team executing what a senior partner sold. This does not scale the way consultancies scale — and that is precisely why it works. Technical security is a domain where the details are the product; delegate the details and you have delegated the product.

Why sixteen mattered

People sometimes treat the age as trivia. It is actually the point. Training at sixteen meant that by the time I took operational command of CIS Security at twenty-two, technical work was not something I supervised — it was something I did, and had been doing for six years. Every framework I have built since, from Lebanon's daily security index to the Shield Curtain doctrine, rests on that foundation: field-earned technical fluency, acquired before I had any title to hide behind.

Expertise built in the field, early, compounds for decades. That is what SAGEM taught a sixteen-year-old — and it is why I tell every ambitious young professional in this industry the same thing: get into the technical room as early as they will let you, and stay until you can explain every signal on the screen.
